Understanding feline behavior

Successful grooming of cats as pets cannot be complete without understanding their behavior. The behavior of any animal can be classified into two broad categories: natural behavior and stress-induced behavior. Understanding cat behavior and reacting favorably to their moods are the basic requirements for maintaining cats as enjoyable pets.

The natural behavioral pattern can be modified and changed by a sustained training process. Stress related behaviors are to be treated by identifying the cause and eliminating them. Left unattended, stress may lead to uncontrolled aggression. Providing implements which are close to their natural environment will help in eliminating stress. Cat trees, cat condos and kitty gyms are specifically designed for this purpose. Many creative designs of cat trees, cat condos and kitty gyms are available in the market.

Natural behavior

Cats love the place in which they live and prefer to maintain the same conditions they are used to. If there is any change in the condition, they fear intrusion and react accordingly. Typical conditions which could induce stress on cats include:

  • Bringing in a new pet
  • Entry of another animal in to the house, including an unknown cat
  • Confronting a new person in the house
  • Remodeling the house or shifting to a new house

In general, natural behavioral responses of cats to any stressful situation can be summarized in two distinctive actions.

First response is passing urine outside the litter box to mark its territory. The second response is vigorous scratching with the claws to make its presence known. Scratching is the most normal behavior of the cat and should not be curbed. Many specially designed cat scratching implements are sold in cat furniture stores. This basic implement is a must for any person who is grooming a cat as a pet, to save their household furniture from cat scratches.

Aggression in cats

Aggression in cats becomes very difficult to control and may require a veterinary doctors intervention. Certain tips to handle the situation are:

  • Aggression is not abnormal

An aggressive situation is not abnormal as they are basic stress relievers. However recurrence of the same becomes a serious issue requiring immediate attention.

  • Early detection and cure

Early detection of aggression is helpful to take immediate corrective action. It should not be allowed to become a habit.

  • Better grooming

Cats which are systematically groomed and trained tend to be less aggressive. This is a better preventive measure than trying to cure aggression after it develops.

  • Provide good ambiance

Providing good ambience for the cat to live will solve many problems of aggression. Many types of cat furniture are available in the market. Cat scratching is one such implement which helps the cats to relieve their tension.

  • Keep kids away

When aggressive behavior is noticed in cats, keep the kids away to avoid any serious injuries to them.

  • Veterinarian interference

If the symptoms persist, it is possible that the problem is due to health conditions. A veterinarian, specialized in cats can offer effective solutions.

Providing good ambience and good grooming are the basic requirements for bringing up and enjoying the company of a cat.

Cat trees, cat condo and kitty gyms are some of the cat furniture designed, keeping in mind cat psychology. Investing on them will help to overcome many behavioral problems in the cats upbringing.
